Melania Trump’s choice of an emerald green gown at a special White House dinner for the Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman was interpreted by some paps and Washington hacks as a cultural overture, the idea of which may not be very far fetched.
Whether it was or wasn’t a great idea, the choice didn’t go unnoticed after an eventful and controversial day at the White House where Saudi Arabia’s leader was welcomed by President Donald Trump.
It was the crown prince’s first visit to the U.S. With several allegations in the pasts, when the president defended the guest and rebuked a female ABC reporter for asking about the killing of Khashoggi, the visitors were more than pleased.
According to reports, the visit led to Saudi Arabia increasing its pledge of $600 billion to nearly $1 trillion worth of investments — largely in defense and minerals — in the U.S.
Although Tuesday night’s event was not an official state dinner, Trump rolled out the red carpet for the crown prince, who acts as prime minister of Saudia Arabia.
The last state dinner in honor of Saudi Arabia was held in February of 1985 for Fahd bin Abdulaziz Al Saud according to records.
